They Both Die At The End by Adam Silvera (4/5)

In a world where a company called Death-Cast calls people inform them that they have the next 24 hours to live before they will meet an untimely death, Adam Silvera’s novel They Both Die At The End follows the story of teenagers Mateo and Rufus who meet each other on an app that connects people who are dying, deckers, to have one last friend. The kids have the time of their lives by going on adventures through the streets of a dystopian version of New York, seeing sights and having the most fun they will ever have before meeting death, something that encourages them to be a little more fun and dangerous than they ever would have been in their entire life. As the book continues, their unlikely friendship grows stronger and stronger, highlighting the themes of love and the importance of friendship which is threatened to be obliterated at any second for they both die at the end.

As interesting and captivating this book sounds, it is. It will keep you reading to search for the ending on how they die and will also make you stay reading to feel and understand their life-threatening emotions that face death in the face and their thoughts about their last hours on Earth. In my eyes, I found a majority of this book to be well written. It was written in a way that truly captures the meaning of life and gives a perspective on it that makes us readers appreciate the ability to live and cherish those around you. While it does feel a little flat out with nothing groundbreaking, it is still a good read that is definitely worth your time.

Personally, it was not a favorite of mine, but let me remind you that it is an excellent book that truly teaches how love and friendship is needed in our world which is an important theme to understand. I know some of you won’t like the book as much for the themes of friendship, but others will adore it and it will become a favorite. Nonetheless, I highly suggest this book to everyone because it has something we all should be aware of, love.
