They Both Die at the End is a novel written by Adam Silvera. It’s placed in a futuristic environment but not totally sci-fi like other novels where there are flying cars. In the novel there is a system called death-cast that lets the ‘victim’ know that they have 1 day left to live. When you receive that call you have no idea when on that day you are actually gonna die. The two main characters Matteo Torrez and Rufus Emeterio both receive their call on the same day. They both have similar yet very different backstories. You learn the trauma that they've both gone through, as well as the trauma they are basically leaving behind. Towards the beginning to middle of the book you learn some key details about their personalities. Due to the extreme nature of what happens so often a website was created for those looking for a friend on their final day. This website called Last Friend helps Matteo and Rufus meetup and although they were both searching for something different they find each other and go into their final hours through an adventure of a lifetime.
Going into the book I thought it was going to be super depressing and sad. However the deeper I got into it it kind of started to uplift my spirits. Though these kids have gone through so much they are still able to find each other which really provided a mood boost. I thought it was a great read that wasn't too challenging but proved to never bore me,
I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who asks. Although if your not into a book that has some really low points and some depressing points I would not recommend this book. However if you’re looking for a book that provides a sense of hope and connection but you’re not scared to read a few darker pages then this book is for you.
