They Both Die At The End By Adam Silvera (5/5)

They Both Die At The End by Adam Silvera is a young adult drama romance novel with elements of science fiction. Thematic concepts seen throughout the novel include self discovery and identity. Some main themes are learning to live for yourself, not for others, and that mortality brings meaning to life. The premise of They Both Die At The End is that there is an organization called Death Cast which, using methods unknown to the public, can predict the day a person will die. Every night between the hours midnight and 3 A.M, Death Cast makes calls to those who will be dying sometime in the next 24 hours. No one has ever lived past the 24 hours after receiving the call. Rufus Emeterio and Mateo Torrez are two 17 year old and 18 year old guys who both received the call on September 15, 2017. They have never met. But today, on the day they die, they meet and remind each other what it really means to live. There are many ways you could spend your last day alive. Some visit their relatives or their favorite park. Some face their fears and become the person they could’ve been all their life if they weren’t scared. Some waste it in denial. Some commit final acts of violence. This novel shared them all. Switching perspectives between the main characters and others whom Mateo and Rufus cross paths with on their final day. This switching of perspectives brings the realization that you have no idea what anyone you meet is going through or the effect you have on them. Personally, I have never cried over a book until this one. I highly suggest this book for someone who likes thoughtful and introspective novels. One of my favorite aspects was witnessing Mateo and Rufus’ relationship progressing through the novel. And how two people who had never met found each other and rediscovered life together. It was impactful without being difficult to understand. This is the kind of book that makes you really imagine and feel what the character is feeling. The feelings of friendship and empathy but also hate and loss throughout this book makes it an emotional rollercoaster. I wholeheartedly recommend this book because it is the kind of book that even though the characters fate is sealed right there in the title, you’re still hoping every page that it’s a lie.
