Thunderhead is a magnificent sequel that can almost rival the first book. Thunderhead is written by Neal Shusterman and was published in 2018. It is the second book out of three in the Arc of a Scythe series. Since the book is the second in the series, this review is written for a reader that has completed the first book, Scythe.
In Thunderhead, Rowan has gone into hiding from the scythedom and has begun removing new order scythes who he does not see fit to serve any longer. Citra, or now Scythe Anastasia, continues to challenge the new order. As sides become more divided, tensions grow and lead to large conflicts and big plot twists. The Thunderhead, seeing all of this and knowing something must be done, selected a seemingly random person to possibly determine the fate of humanity as a whole.
Thunderhead is a well-written, interesting, and suspenseful novel. The plot moves in a logical way, but can be predictable at times. It has thrilling moments and can easily immerse you in the world so you never want to stop reading. The different arcs are well connected and the dialogue flows nicely. The novel does end on multiple large cliffhangers which, along with some aspects of the story not being addressed for long periods of time, shows how the book can just be a bridge between the first and third books in some parts. Some things are left to be explained later, but these are few and far between and are not major problems in the story. The climax is very eventful and leaves the reader wanting to know what happens next.
Overall, Thunderhead is a highly engaging novel that has great plot twists and generated lots of suspense. It can feel predictable and feel as if it is just a filler in the series at times but these are not a major problem and the book has many of its own interesting storylines. I rate it a 9/10. If you enjoyed Scythe then you will enjoy Thunderhead as well.
