Jenny Han has crafted a perfect rom-com novel, with relatable and witty characters making it easy to like them. To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before is the first book in a trilogy that follows our main character Lara-Jean and her journey throughout high school. As soon as you start reading, you’ll find yourself in love with Lara-Jean and her innocent nature. Lara-Jean is a shy 17-year-old high schooler trying to break out of her shell and figure out her place in life and who she’s meant to be. As she goes on this journey, she finds out life isn’t easy, having twists and turns come at her in every way. Making the readers realize not everything can go the way you want. Jenny Han perfectly captures emotion with her writing, making readers feel what the main character feels. You will find yourself laughing with Lara-Jean, or feeling the hurt she feels at different points. Using plot twists and engaging dialogue, Jenny Han gives the book a comfortable pace that keeps readers hooked. By the end of the book, the readers will notice a change in the characters, giving the book a sentimental and nostalgic feel. However, the ending might leave readers angry as the author leaves us searching for answers, desperately wanting more of the book. Even so, readers will want to re-read this book over again because it is adorable, making for a perfect “pick me up” book read.
