This book starts off with introducing the main character, a dog named Chet. Chet is the dog of Bernie, these 2 operate a private investigator firm by the name of “Little Detective Agency.” One day when investigating a case about a possible cheater, Bernie sees the person who is cheating with the wife of the client, is his ex wife’s current fiancee, Betnie decided not to tell his ex to make sure his son, Charlie, has a better life. After Bernie figures out the case, the client gives him 2 tickets to the circus as an added bonus for his services. He plans on going to the circus on the weekend his ex and her fiance go on a weekend getaway, so he can have his son and go with him. They go to the circus that weekend and find out that the prized possession of the zoo, their elephant named “Peanut” is gone, and her notorious trainer by the name of Uri DeLeath is also missing and is nowhere to be found. Until the main attractions were found, the circus seemed to be nothing. When Barnie, Chet, and Barney’s son come there, there is already a police force and the owner of the circus there. They talk and see the mysterious circumstances of the kidnapping. They meet many new leads to what could have happened, including the clown of the circus named PoPo who was married to Uri, who even cared enough to privately hire Barney and Chet to find Uri and Peanut. They also find the security worker by the name Darren who seemed to not do his job properly and let an elephant get stolen, and soon gets fired by the owner of the circus as a result of this. The dynamic duo both try to find evidence of how this happened, by asking more leads and following different people and cars around to find evidence of what could have possibly happened. Their journey takes them far out and they face many different obstacles to find and solve this mystery. Along their journey, the duo finds lots of interesting things ranging from new obscure evidence to literal dead people. The 2 detectives work as hard as they can to track this elephant and its trainer down, even though many people in the book feel as if it is an unsolvable case.
I have lots of mixed feelings about this book. As a person who really likes dogs, I think that the idea of tracking the perspective of the book and what happens through a dog is a smart and unique idea. It had lots of suspense and good plot lines I really enjoyed. The biggest problem with the book is also one of the best parts of the book, the suspense. The book had so much suspense and moved so fast it felt very hard to keep up at times and I felt lost sometimes, not even knowing what was going on at the given moment in the book. I do have to admit though, the suspension was polarizing and this was a page turner for sure. The ideas and the character development in the book were really well written even though it was a little fast paced for my liking. The characters are very deeply written and just from reading, the characters feel real. Reading this book also taught me a lot, and showed me how to deal with harsh situations and the characters taught me to keep on going. The idea and the writing is there, the execution and writing style however were nothing too crazy.
At the end of the day I did enjoy this book. Even though I did not enjoy it as much as I did when compared to some other books it was still a pretty decent read. Though it is fast moving, it is a great book and I enjoyed it a lot. I learned a lot and it was better than most of the books I have read before. Some advice to future readers is to make sure to go back and re-read the parts you don’t understand because they come back later in the book and make it a bit more challenging to understand.
