To Sleep in a Sea of Stars, or TS3 as I will be abbreviating it too, is about a xenobiologist named Kira, who was sent by a corporation with her team and Alan, the man she loves, to a planet a couple light years away from Sol (Our solar system).
She is worried about her next mission, because she might be separated from Alan, but right before she gets to leave, the mission commander tells her to check out a fallen drone that was carrying biological material. She goes, and when she gets there, she spies a strange rock formation. She decides to investigate the rocks, because there isn’t anything like that on the planet. But when she tries to climb the rocks, her skinsuit's gecko pads break, and she falls into a dusty room created by aliens. She is ecstatic, as she would be the second person to discover proof of sentient lifeforms. But then the dust begins to move, and she isn’t so ecstatic anymore, thrust into an intergalactic war, she must bear the weight of what she has made, and the responsibilities she gets forced upon her. She joins the crew of the Wallfish, and meets people of various characters, all while dealing with “Obsidian”. With multiple completely unique alien species, amazing depictions of spaceships, and realistic science behind it all, it's what every sci-fi fan loves. It gives the feelings of fighting a colossus, an unstoppable force, and the human will to keep going no matter what.
This book was written by one of my favorite artists, Christopher Paoilini, and was recommended, so I read it and I'm not disappointed. It's very enjoyable, and I didn’t want to put it down. It’s a nice length, so you won’t be left wanting for a couple days. Its also part of a series, with two other books beside this one.
This was a great book, and I for sure recommend it to anyone thinking about it. It's filled with vibrant ideas, and a world that feels alive. I listen to it with music, and I really enjoyed that, but I know that isn’t for everyone.
