Too Many Curses by A. Lee Martinez is a good, well-written, and funny fiction read for frequent readers as well as people who only read occasionally. The author doesn’t try to keep it serious, maintaining the ridiculous concept with an even more ridiculous story. A main theme of the book seems to be on the importance of accepting change. With a diverse cast of silly characters, the reader is presented with insight as to the regular life in this fantasy world. There are many different animals and fantastical creatures in the book with funny personalities and quirks. The conflicts leading up to the ending add a lot of story building, and the resolutions are fun and engaging. The main character’s character development adds a lot to the story and makes for a fun and unique ending. I really enjoyed reading it, and had moments where I was on the edge of my seat for the next twist or turn. I loved the fun cast of characters, who all have unique personalities and comedic traits. The ways that the author references mythology and folklore were fun and creative. The writing style can appeal to readers all over, being easy to read and with well written transitions. The author finds good ways to mitigate the suspenseful moments of the books with a smart inner dialogue from the decisive and thoughtful main character. The author presents many thoughts on the importance of confidence and standing up for yourself. There aren’t any horrible tragic moments, instead presenting conflict in a comedic, over the top manner that replaces tears with laughter. This is a great book for anybody looking to find a silly, quick fantasy read with magic and funny characters. If you are looking for a book with high stakes, action, and lots of suspense, however, I would recommend that you look elsewhere. Too Many Curses is better suited for a nice book that you can read over long periods of time. I would recommend reading it before bed or on vacation, as it doesn’t have the suspense that keeps you reading, and the tone of the book stays light and silly.
