Twilight (5/5)

Bella Swan is a 17-year-old girl living in Phoenix Arizona. Her parents are split up and she lives with her mom Renée and her mother’s boyfriend Phil. Moving from Phoenix to go spend time with her father Charlie and finish off high school. When she arrives there she sees her childhood friend Jacob Black who was helping her dad fix her up a car as a gift of gratitude for her moving to Forks to stay with him. When Bella first got to school (Forks High School) she met Mike a bubbly student tour guide that seemed very excited to have a new student, for in Forks those were very rare. Later throughout the day, she met Angela, Eric, and Jessica. When she got to lunch she was very taken by a very peculiar group of students, the Cullens. The students were described to be immensely beautiful almost in an impractical way. She was later told by her newly made friends that they don’t really seem to like anybody other than those surrounding their circle. Jessica then notices that Edward Cullen is looking directly at Bella and absolutely takes no time pointing it out. Edward though has a look of unease realizing that he can not read Bella’s thoughts, although she doesn’t know about that yet. Throughout the day they have quite a few more unpleasant encounters one of which being in chemistry where Edward first officially meets Bella. Bella feels something is off when he doesn't show for the next few days. When he finally does return though he introduces himself and apologizes for how he may have come across. Bella continues to notice signs that the Cullens aren’t ordinary. Her basis comes off a story Jacob told her when she and her friends went down to a local beach (La Plush). The story was that Jacobs's ancestors were derived from wolves and the Cullens were some type of other creature that attacked them. Bella needs answers after Edward saved her from a car skidding on black ice with only his arm travels to Port Angeles to get a book on the legend. On her way to go back to Jessica and Angela who are shopping for dresses for the semi-formal, she runs into a group of intoxicated men in an alley. Edward pulls up in a car to save her saying he knew what they were thinking. The next day Bella tells Edward she knows what he is and Edward actually encourages Bella to say aloud what that is. That’s when we find out the Cullens are vampires. Keeping this secret safe for them Bella ultimately seems to be welcomed into the family and in a way becomes a Cullen herself. Although, she has a sort of longing of wanting to be a vampire too. She keeps telling herself that perhaps that is why she never truly fit in because being a vampire was her destiny. Later, when Jacob tagged along on a “date” with Bella and Mike starts to heat up and gets quite sick. We find out later that this is because he was turning into his genes of being a werewolf. Jacob highly advises against Bella’s romantic feelings towards Edward, but that doesn’t stop her. Her proximity towards the Cullens does end up making her a human target for a vampire called James who first meets her in a family baseball match with the Cullens. James is a tracker who is relentless in wanting to kill Bella. Luckily he is beheaded after trying to lead Bella to her death by tricking her with a recording at her old studio of her mom. He did however manage to bite Bella’s arm which Edward had to suck the venom out of so that it didn’t change her. This only brought them closer though. Making Bella’s ultimate target to become a vampire so they could be together forever. And making Edwards goal resisting her pleads so she could live a happy human life.

I found the book to be truly captivating. Personally, I’m a big fan of any kind of mythological creature so this book did not disappoint. I also love Alice in this book I truly think she adds such a peculiar but cute character to the book. While I do think it is extremely odd that Bella is so infatuated with Edward after only like a week and a half especially since they’re in high school, I’m still a big fan of the romance aspect. I like how they added Victoria as Jame’s girlfriend since it gives the story a nice flow as to who the next villain will be. In a lot of books, we don’t know the villain's motive but in this saga at least we do.

While I do recognize that pretty much every audience seems to love this book for it to truly sink in I think it’s important to read it while in high school for you to understand the infatuation they have with each other. In high school, it is most likely that you would meet someone and make irrational decisions convinced you’re in love with them. And no matter how tempting it is please read the book before you watch the movie. It’s important to draw your own conclusions on how the characters deliver their lines and receive them, what the setting looks like, and what the characters look like. With that final piece of advice, all I can tell you now is to take the time to read this work of art because I assure you, you won’t regret it.
