Hoover creates a passionate and twisty story line of two people. The story goes along both characters' thought process, following the woman Tate in the present time and the man Miles 6 years in the past. The first chapter opens to Tate moving in with her brother and her first encounter with Miles. In the beginning it is obvious there is a spark between the two of them but when things start up later on Miles makes it clear there will be rules, “Never ask about the past; don’t expect a future.” This generates an unexpected dynamic between the two. As Tate and Miles' background becomes more apparent, so does the pain. The book is a rollercoaster of emotions that will have someone crying both happy and sad tears. I was enamored with the writing style. I could feel the characters emotions through the intense descriptions Hoover used. Nothing in this book was subtle. Usually, the image of love shows people happy, and carefree. However, Hoover changes that by showing the dark and painful side of it. Tate is a relatable character with the way she thinks about situations. The unpredictability will have you on your toes. It really was Ugly Love.
