We'll Always Have Summer by Jenny Han

Emry M.

Isabel Conklin, who goes by Belly, is a regular teenage girl who is unrightfully stuck on two boys who happen to be brothers. The book We’ll Always Have Summer by Jenny Han is the third book to a series based on a love triangle. As of the beginning of the third novel to the series, Belly loves Conrad, the eldest brother of the two, but has already had her swing at Jeremiah, the youngest. With the help of her best friend Taylor, she puts herself in even more of a pickle. As she always spends her summer with the boys in their beach house, she’s had enough time to go back and forth between them all and add another guy she met at a bonfire into the mix. He ended up being dumped for Jeremiah who was also dumped for his brother Conrad. Conrad had always been the opinionated, quiet, and odd one while Jeremiah was talkative, comedic, and similar to a golden retriever. As the three kids got older, more and more apprehension was created between them. Unfortunately, the brothers are facing the death of their mother, which comes into conflict because it also affects Belly, while she’s still creating the mess of her indecisive feelings. Just like Belly, any girl around the ages of 13-17 can relate to the anxious and thought spiraling idea of falling in love. This novel portrays the uplift and downfall of emotions which happen when entering adult-hood and being faced with head vs. heart and self vs. family controversy. I admire the way Jenny Han showed the importance of family and balanced it with the coming of age topic such as young love and lust. The storyline was overall well rounded and gave a decent perspective on each character's progression. Even though this series was nothing crazy, it is a great choice for any teenager who is looking forward to creating their own love life. I choose to rate this book a 4 out of 5 stars because of its captivating dialogue and overall angsty tension. As the book was a great read, I would have wished the ending was a bit more exciting, as one could say.
