we were liars by e. Lockhart (4/5)

The book “we were liars” by E. Lockhart is about a girl named Cadence Sinclair and her family's vacations to their grandfather's private island every summer with the entire family. This novel contains young-adult fiction and is a pretty challenging read. The story surrounds the fact that two years ago, during one of the vacation trips, she had an accident, causing her to forget what had happened that summer. So once she turned 17 she sought the island to find out what happened to her when she was 15. Cadence finds many uncovered secrets and lies along the way, and finally, once she completes her quest to find out what had happened to her, a shocking truth is discovered. “we were liars” was pretty entertaining, and memorable because of all the crazy twists and turns you go through in the book, like when Cadence said she had gotten “shot” at the beginning of the book, when she was just harshly describing the pain she had been going through. One of the many reasons I liked the novel so much is that it shows how arrogance and discrimination can lead to losing loved ones and splitting families. The one thing I disagree with is the unreliable narrator. When I first started reading this book I was shocked at the fact that a child was shot in the first few pages, but in all reality, the narrator was overreacting and she continues to do so throughout the story. Which is extremely confusing to someone who has just started the book. “we were liars” suggests that lies can build up into horrid things, and they deter you from doing so. The matters the book leaves out are the lies that can help others get through difficult times. Like in the “House On Mango Street '' the narrator is reliable and tells truthful information throughout the book unlike how the narrator in “we were liars” portrayed the story. This book showed me the importance of telling the truth, and keeping my family close. This book has shown me that integrity is the best thing you can do in a bad or sticky situation. The issues with the narrator did add a little creativity to the book. I advise any potential readers who like the genres of mystery, romance, or general family-related problems to read this book. It has many neat stories, advice and more waiting to be uncovered in this wonderful Deus ex machina book.
