The book I read, What Happens After Midnight, follows Lily Hopper, a senior at a private high school. She is known for being a “goody two shoes,” and her mom is a Literature teacher at the high school she attends. Lily is worried she may have missed out on some of the scandalous fun of being a teenager. There are only two weeks left of school, and the Jester, who pulls a senior prank every year, has not yet pulled their prank, which worries the students. Lily puts no thought into the prank until the anonymous Jester emails her, asking for her help in pulling the senior prank. Against her better judgment, she agrees to help, and assumes it is for access to the school using her mother’s keys. When she meets up with the Jester and his other acquaintances, she comes to a realization that the Jester is none other than her ex boyfriend, Taggart Swell. Her friends are there as well, and so is the brother of their target, her prom date and president of the student council, Daniel. She feels that she shouldn’t be pranking her prom date, but she does not have true feelings, so she moves forward with the prank anyway. The Jester’s group hides clues for the almanacs, the school’s yearbooks. They encounter many struggles through the night, and it is hard to ignore the tension between Tag and Lily, but they complete the prank nonetheless. Many events unroll as the consequence of the prank, but in the end, all turns out okay for Lily and the Jester. When I first got this book, I hadn’t realized that this author had written another book that I enjoyed, The Summer of Broken Rules. I was excited to read the book when I realized she had written one of my favorite books, and she certainly did not disappoint with this book. She created a Young Adult Romance book that didn’t follow the stereotypical plots normal books follow. She cleverly thought out a unique plot that causes readers to want to read more. I loved reading this book, and it gave me butterflies in my stomach. I think that readers of this genre should not only read this book, but also The Summer of Broken Rules. To conclude, I give this book 5 stars, and I encourage Romance readers to read this book.
