What My Mother Doesn’t Know by Sonya Sones, written in verse is the first book in a duology representing a coming of age theme.
Ninth-grader Sophie Stein has a rough home life with her parents fighting constantly and not giving her attention. Her escape is through her best friends and Dylan. She and Dylan are the picture-perfect couple, he even has his own nickname for her, Sapphire. That is, at least, until she dances with this flawless stranger at the school masquerade ball. Now she is left with the constant question, who is her mystery man?
The novel itself has a mediocre plotline but the writing style of Sonya Sones has you hooked and hungry to read more. She uses smooth and interesting diction along with the varied uses of metaphors, juxtaposition, and punctuation in her syntax keeping the reader’s eye feeling pleasant while reading. Even though I wasn’t very interested in the characters or the plot, I found myself deeply invested and intrigued by this novel in verse.
What My Mother Doesn’t Know is a great easy read that will make you more and more invested through each page turn. Because of Sonya Sones’s incredible writing style, this has been one of my favorite and most enjoyable books to read.
