Cosmic horror novel What the Hell Did I Just Read sends readers into a whole new world of bizarrely creative monsters, demons, and supernatural forces with the theme of lying as NYT bestselling author Jason Pargin’s third installment in the series. In a broken and small town that never stops raining, John, David, and Amy investigate the case of a lost girl that has been kidnapped by Nymph, a shapeshifting demon mastermind that takes the story through many lies and illusions that make you question everything. As the book continues, you go through many deaths and mysteries that are untold to all be illusions part of a bigger piece. Problems arise of roach built children, a BATMANTIS???, a sketchy organization of not dying agents, and the flooding town, making Dave and John risk taking the “soy sauce”.
This book is like a weird horror comedy movie that has points in it like a sci-fi where you have to really think. Personally, this book was very entertaining. It was top of the notch hilarious, random, and written with the most unusual details that make it pretty fun. I must warn you, it is very weird. This book will literally make you slam it shut and say “what the hell did I just read?” As being the third book in the John Dies at the End series, there was no issue reading as it works perfectly on its own. It is a little suggestive with an average amount of cursing and suggestive topics throughout, but it works fine for high school level.
While it’s not a groundbreaking book, it’s a wonderfully eccentric novel that will do its job as equally as a well-done movie. Some may ease through this book and be captivated while others will be mildly interested. Nonetheless, if you like dark comedy horror and really strange content, I highly recommend this novel.
