Where The Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens (4/5)

At the base of the firetower, Chase Owen's lifeless body awaits resolution. How could the most promising man in town be found dead in the filth of marsh territory. The same territory that “The Marsh Girl” roams. Where the Crawdads Sing is a touching story in which a young girl named Catherine Daniel Clark, or more commonly referred to as “Kya '', survives on her own in what is called, “The marsh” in North Carolina. She had been abandoned and abused most of her life. Through her darkest moments, Kya developed a quiet strength that was misunderstood and surprising to the people of Barkley Cove. At a young age, after being left alone in the marsh, she is alienated from the outside world. Coping with the solitude, she finds refuge in nature, but as she experiences the real world, Kya struggles to find someone who she can actually trust. Few of those relationships benefit her, and broken from past trauma, she has a hard time trusting those who she should hold onto. Kya begins to develop a life outside of the marsh, but after the tragic death of Chase Owens, “The Marsh Girl” is to blame.

The author, Delia Owens, Brilliantly tells the story capturing heartfelt emotions as well as the realistically complex characters. She dives deep into creating a vital backstory for each character, tapping into the personal worlds behind them. While reading the book, Where the Crawdads Sing, I found that I was extremely conflicted with Kyas actions. The book causes one to question their view of morality. To what extent should someone go to protect themselves? Were Kyas actions justified? How would I react in a situation like this one? I rated this book four out of five. I really enjoyed the thrill of the plot, but I personally would not prefer to read a romance centered book. Overall, Where the Crawdads Sing is a beautifully written book. If you are looking for a riveting mystery, a coming-of-age story, a romantic thriller, Where the Crawdads Sing would be a great option.
