The book is about a young Nightwing dragon, named Moonwatcher, who lives on the giant island of Pyrrhia, growing up in the rainforest, while the rest of her tribe lives on an island of lava with a volcano that erupts and forces the Nightwings to leave their home. Moon’s mother had hidden her in the rainforest so she didn’t have to live on the island, and for this reason, many of the other Nightwings resent her. Another thing that is different about her is that she can read minds and see the future, a power of her tribe that was thought to have gone missing a long time ago. When her mother sends her to Jade Mountain Academy, run by the Prophecy Dragonets. There, she discovers another mind reader, an immortal animus Nightwing from 2,000 years ago, named Darkstalker, who was buried in rocks and put into slumber. With her mind-reading powers, she discovers someone is trying to commit murder at Jade Mountain. She befriends a Rainwing named Kinkajou, a Sandwing named Qibli, an Icewing named Winter, a Seawing named Turtle, and a Mudwing named Umber. They help her to find the plotter, but can’t stop her, and she ends up killing a Nightwing and a Skywing. She was intending to kill Winter’s sister, who had killed her sister and was sent away. Moon’s friends then vowed they would help her to find Darkstalker, who had helped Moon learn how to use her powers.
The book surprised me when they killed off two characters close to the protagonist who could’ve been future allies. Also, when Moon used the sound of rain to drown out everyone’s thoughts in crowded spaces, even though she resents the rain because of how she remembers growing up all alone in the rainforest, her mother rarely making an appearance after escaping the island.
This book is an enjoyable fantasy novel with plot twists and a sort of murder mystery. It’s interesting to examine the behavior of an introvert who didn’t interact with a lot of people at a young age being thrown into a situation where her otherworldly powers are tested.
