The book I am reviewing is Wonder by R.J. Palacio. This book is pretty good. I picked this book, because I heard about it before and never read it. Throughout the book, it has a pretty common theme of never bully kids and being different from others isn’t a bad thing. In the book, the main character, Auggie was born with a deformation which makes his face look weird and makes other normal things like eating and also hearing hard. This book is about him going to public school for the first time as he was homeschooled all his life and how he navigates through different challenges within the public school as he encounters bullies and also makes friends in the process. This book is a very relaxing and interesting book to read. It is interesting because you don’t encounter this theme a lot in other books. What I also like about the book is how the side characters also have their own problems. For example, Auggie’s older sister Via goes into her first day of high school and realizes that her best friends, Miranda and Ella have completely changed. Also, she has the problem of her parents not noticing her. She describes Auggie as “the sun” and that her and her parents are “the planets revolving around the sun.” The author does a good job of conveying the theme throughout the book which makes me agree with the author that we shouldn’t bully kids that are different. This book overall has a lot of plot lines that come together and compliment each other well. I like how they take the POV of many characters throughout the novel and how they are feeling. This book makes the possibilities of other kids like Auggie that are scared and shy that they could attend public school and make friends. This theme grew on me and made me be aware more about bullying. The reason why I rate this a ⅘ is because the plot lines combined very well and the theme was an ongoing thing throughout the book which is what made it stand out very well.
