A Good Girl's Guide To Murder (5/5)

Madeleine Redmond

Holly Jackson writes an engaging tale of mystery, romance, and comedy. Her novel, “A Good Girl’s Guide To Murder” entails Pippa Fitz-Amobi, or Pip’s journey to uncovering the truth. She investigates and digs deep into the murder of Andie Bell, a crime that happened several years ago. Andie’s boyfriend, Salil Singh, or “Sal”, Pip believes was falsely accused. As she goes further into the investigation, a mysterious person is known to be hindering Pip’s work through evil means. Pip must consider whether or not the crime is worth solving with all the threats posed to her family. To get into depth about the characters, each one is very interesting. Pippa, a high school student, is clever and witty, and her thought process out matches many YA detectives. Her friend, Ravi Singh, Salil’s brother, is funny and smart. However, Ravi has some intrinsic trust issues due to the media and internet harassing his family after the murder. Pip’s family is supportive, however both her parents are concerned that she is taking the investigation too far. All the interviewees and suspects have different personalities, and each backstory is engaging and makes the reader think. It’s a who-dun-it until the end, and it will keep you on your toes. I could not put this book down, and finished it in three days. It was funny, frightening at times, and I became very invested. Jackson does a phenomenal job of creating likeable protagonists, and hateable antagonists. She weaves her story with multiple elements of literature, using fantastic imagery and symbolism. My reaction to this book was of surprise. I didn’t expect a YA mystery novel to be as good as it was, and for the story to rope me in. I believe that “A Good Girl’s Guide To Murder” is one of the best books I have ever read, not just because of the way that Jackson writes, but because of the story line. While reading, I never once caught a plot hole nor even a typo. This book was fantastically written. I have many ideas about this book, however I will summarize them. This book is amazing and engaging, and will keep you invested until the last page. However, be warned that there is violence, and some cussing. I loved this book, and I recommend you to read it too!
