There are 4 stories in this book all showing the despicable things and tragic events that happen to people in this world. One story called “1922”, a man, his wife and a son live on a farm. The wife is the owner of the land and is planning on selling the land for profit, the husband disagrees and decides to kill her with his son. They barry her on the land in a shallow grave. Rats infest her grave and attack the man's farm. Years pass and his son and his girlfriend are dead. The whole town starts to suspect him of things and go against him. So he sells the land, later in a hotel he stays at, rats come out and kill him showing that evil actions will bring consequences. The next story is “Big Driver”, A writer named Tess, after doing an event at a library, she continues to go home. The librarian tells her to take a specific road since there are troubles on the usual way home, so she listens and proceeds. On her way home she pops a tire. A truck driver comes from the gas station and helps her. Before he does anything, he knocks her out and raps and beats her. She escapes after waking up shortly later and doesn't say anything. Time passes and she goes back to kill the driver for revenge. Not much meaning besides that sexually assaulted, women are never heard and its hard for them so she took care of it on her own. After this we have a new story called “Fair Extension ''. David Streeter, has lung cancer and wont live long, so he would do anything to live longer. While he drives home he meets a man in a tent named Elvid who is portrayed as the devil. He makes a deal with Elvid stating that he will live 15 years longer and will have all his wants and wishes, a good life, but he has to give his bad luck to someone else. His “best friend” Tom, who hates since he has such a perfect life, receives his bad luck. Tom loses his wife, loses his job, his whole life completely falls apart. Streeter doesn't care since Tom was such a bad friend to Streeter and continues on with his perfect life. Lst story is called “A Good Marriage”, Wife and Husband, Darcy and Bob. Bob goes on a business trip, Darcy starts cleaning her house and bumps into a box with many fake ids and passports. Darcy makes a theory that Bob could be a serial killer, he goes on business trips every time someone is murdered and he is always near the site of slaughter. She confronts him when he comes back, but he says that all the personal identifications are his old friends, Duvall, who was a serial killer. As Darcy is still suspicious she leaves it. But as he is about to go on another business trip she tries to stop him. By alluring him into thinking they will have a sexual interaction, she pushes him down the stairs and strangles him. The police come in and see that he indeed was a serial killer and she doesn't receive any punishment. My reaction to this book had many emotions, fear, happiness, sadness, intrigued, really got me hooked into how many of these lives were sad and traumatic and deep. As much as they were messed up it still was a fun read since it was a rollercoaster. I honestly loved this book a lot. Stephen king again with a great book. I highly recommend this book since it has such an impact and it's like watching “Law and Order: Special Victims Unit” Just in a book.
