If We Were Villains has been described as a “love letter to theatre”, and I'm unable to disagree. This book is complex, with meaning after meaning hidden under layers of references and interpretations. It's a thriller, a mystery, and definitely one of the angstiest books I've read. But M. L. Rio pulls it off. With many direct and indirect references to Shakespeare's work, it's nearly impossible to comprehend without at least a basic understanding of some of his most famous plays. This book does a great job of expanding on the dark sides of youth and passion, and I highly recommend it. Especially if your taste in books is essentially just The Secret History by Donna Tartt.
