Meet Me in Another Life by Catriona Silvey (3/5)

Thora and Santi always find each other in life after life. All of them being unique and building on their relationships, either as teacher to student, lovers, or even Santi adopting Thora, all while the city square clock is stuck at different times and the stars are seeming to be something they’re not. Then, in a time where they are siblings, a mysterious man in a blue coat appears, stating his name is Peregrine. Over and over he repeats “Something happened,” while having a stroke. In the lives after, Thora and Santi start to remember, but even if they remember past lives, they can’t seem to find a way to explain the phenomenon that’s occurring. Peregrine shows up again and again throughout different lives, each time voicing cryptic messages. Santi and Thora try to understand if there is a meaning behind their different experiences while losing the concept of themselves and their relationships. The world starts to break in on itself, Thora discovering loopholes and glitches occurring throughout the city. Whilst Thora believes breaking the world can somehow let them escape, Santi feels their situation is up to fate and what God chooses for them. They argue continually but determine that Peregrine has a meaning in their immortal curse. After searching for years, they figure out they can summon him by saying his name. Santi and Thora attempt to question him for answers, but he communicates in a way they can’t understand. In time, they come to a building that is consistently under construction in all of their various lives and inside they find themselves in tubes. Santi is able to discover through Peregrine that they are in a simulation and in the tubes are their real selves. Santi also discovers that Peregrine is the spaceship that the tubes are inside. Upon uncovering this information, they find out that the spaceship has been damaged and Thora and Santi’s real selves are in the midst of dying. When trying to get themselves to wake up, one of them dies while the other makes it through.

The book was entertaining, but got repetitive and the pacing wasn’t spectacular. While the ending was fairly predictable, the writing succeeded in bringing the reader in. If you are looking for complex and inquisitive characters and multiple twists in the plot, this book could be up to your speed, but some other novels of this genre might be a better read.
