Sometimes, people aren’t what they seem. Kind and helpful on the surface, someone could be hiding a dark secret. The thriller, Misery, by Stephen King, captures this situation expertly. After a car crash, Paul Sheldon, a famous writer, finds himself in the middle of nowhere, severely injured and in a coma. Miraculously, he is picked up by a woman named Anne Wilkes who brings him to her house nearby, tends to his wounds, splints his broken legs, and feeds him. Even better, she turns out to be his number-one fan! A crazy obsessive fan. Paul quickly senses that something is off about her, something is dangerous. She keeps him hostage and forces him to write another book - a sequel to his most recent one where her favorite character is killed. Paul tries to escape but his legs have been splinted wrong, so it’s all he can do to survive. This book was highly entertaining. The graphic details and exciting plot line were thrilling. It starts slow, and there are some quiet parts, but an exciting, unexpected twist always turns up. I recommend this book to anyone who loves gruesome thrillers and complex plots. Just know, it’s the opposite of a beach read.
