Mr. Mercedes by Stephen King (4/5)

Mr. Mercedes is one of the later novels by Stephen King. It follows Bill Hodges, a retired detective haunted by the unsolved case of the job fair attack, as he tracks the self proclaimed ”perk”. The killer, Brady Hartsfield, lives with his alcoholic mother and is outwardly ordinary. This book had some fast paced scenes and also some disturbing scenes. A main thread in this story is Hodges believing he is the only one capable of catching the perpetrator. He continues down this path despite or because of losing someone he cared about, even though he's putting more people he cared about at risk. Overall it was an interesting read and at times hard to put down. However, I kinda expected Brady's plan to murder thousands of people to be more innovative, grand, or somehow more inherently evil than what it actually was. Nonetheless, it was interesting how deluded he was. I would not recommend it if you are squeamish, but Mr. Mercedes is definitely good for a thrill.
