Everyone has something to hide from Simon Kelleher’s gossip website, but who hated him enough to kill him in hopes their secrets died with him?
One of Us Is Lying, by Karen McManus is a young-adult mystery novel that takes place in a California high school during the 21st century. This book is the first in a two-book series in which the high school’s mysteries continue.
Simon Kelleher is notoriously known for finding everyone’s secrets and posting them to his gossip website. On the first day of school, astounding baseball player, Cooper Clay, popular cheerleader, Addy Prentis, future valedictorian, Bronwyn Rojas, and notorious bad-boy, Nate McManus, and Simon Kelleher end up in detention for reasons that don’t add up.
Before detention ends Simon Kelleher suffers an allergic reaction and is deemed dead. An investigation begins and the police decide this death was no accident. The four other students are suspects and their secrets might not be as safe as they think they are.
I believe this book is extremely well written in a way that the reader struggles to put down the book. There were never sections where I was bored and dreading reading. I loved the plot twists throughout the book and I was on edge while reading. The book is fast-paced and not difficult to read. I was shocked by the ending and think the author did a great job of adding bits of detail in certain places to make it all make sense in the end.
Once the mystery was starting to be uncovered, I was so intrigued and struggled to put the book down. I enjoyed all of the characters and think their personalities were extremely well portrayed.
I strongly recommended this book and give it 5 stars. I enjoyed this book so much that I went on to read the sequel, which was just as good, and another mystery book by the same author. If you enjoy young-adult and modern books I believe this one would be a good fit. If you are looking for an easy and intriguing book I recommended One of Us Is Lying.
