One of Us is Next by Karen Mcmanus (4/5)

The book takes place in Bayview, home of the Bayview four (witnesses in a large murder case that took place the previous year). This time a new challenge has risen, a game of truth or dare. A mysterious user has created the game, and if the chosen student picks truth, a secret about them is revealed, but if they pick dare they are put up to some pretty sneaky stuff. The user advises to “always take the dare” (McManus 44). The book takes you on a thrilling ride as the plot unfolds and secrets are revealed.

One of Us is Next was very a very thrilling and entertaining piece of literature. It had many twists and turns, and had some very shocking reveals. I agree with the way that the relationships are portrayed, the friendships and the romances, the way that Maeve and Knox stayed friends through everything that they went through, and how the author kept the relationships from the previous book. I also enjoined how the author was realistic about the relationships, not everything was sunshine and rainbows. How they were strong but went through many rough patches, However, I don’t agree with the fact that the characters never went to an adult, to help them with all the stuff they were going through, which is very unrealistic. Furthermore, I disagree with the fact that Bayview2020 (a Reddit user) was never revealed because it would have opened so many new possibilities in the book, like the unrevealed user being one of the main characters, or Brandon, a victim of murder at the beginning of the book, like how in One of Us is Lying, everyone assumed Simon was murdered because he knew too much. The book also reflects how the students have to keep going and move forward in their lives even with these terrible ideas in their heads, they have to continue to go about normally even with murder cases and death threats.

Overall, One of Us is Next was an enjoyable book, it did have some things that I believe should be fixed, but it was still a fun read. It was thrilling, and while it was not show-stopping or the best book I’ve ever read, it was still enjoyable and a good way to pass the time. I do recommend it.
