Pet Sematary by Stephen King

4/5

What does a family do when their youngest child dies? Themes and others like this are explored in Stephen King’s Pet Sematary. The book was published in 1983 and is the only book. However, the movie has been adapted into a movie twice and has a sequel Pet Sematary. A prequel is also being released on Paramount+ titled Pet Sematary: Bloodlines. The plot of Pet Sematary is the Creed Family (that being) Louis (Father/ Husband), Rachel (Wife/ Mother), Ellie (Daughter), Gage (Son), and their cat Church (shorthand for Winston Churchill) move to Ludlow, Maine from Chicago, Illinois. Louis is a doctor who then goes to work for a college and on the first day a student Victor Pascow is hit by a car when he was jogging and dies in his care from deep and intense wounds. That night Victor leads him up to the Pet Sematary where their neighbor and close friend of Louis and the family Jud Crandall showed the family a few days ago. Victor leads Louis to the Sematary and to the deadfall behind it and warns him not to go past it. Later that October Norma Crandall (Jud’s wife) almost died from a heart attack and Louis was able to save her so the bonds between both families become closer. Then in November Rachel and the kids visit her parents for Thanksgiving and leave Louis behind as he has a very strained relationship (Her parents tried to buy Louis out of marrying Rachel. As Jud warned Louis that the road between the two houses (they are across the street from each other) is a death road, Church wanders too far and gets hit and killed by a truck passing by from the nearby nuclear power plant. Jud leads Louis to bury the cat past the deadfall to the Micmac (native American tribe who lived there centuries ago) burying ground. Church the next day returns before the return of his family but he acts different, weird, more violent but alive so Ellie is happy as it was her cat. Later when Gage was playing with a kite in the front yard and playing with the kite wanders too far and is struck and slammed by a truck and killed. I think it's a good read for anyone with a dark side as Stephen King says in the introduction of the book is the most frightening he’s ever written. So in that case it is a pretty great horror story for its darkness but also it is a weakness because sometimes it goes a little far overall it is an interesting dark tale that poses questions for the darker sides of humanity.
