Revenge of the Wannabes by Lisi Harrison (5/5)

7th grader Alicia Rivera breaks away from her best friend Massie Block’s exclusive clique in hopes of forming her own. The clique, a group of girls that attend the private academy, Octavian Country Day School, consists of only the, in their terms and fast judgments, prettiest, most fashionable, and wealthy few. Massie Block, the alpha, finds that Alicia is off to form her own clique, which leaves her in shock, but then that shock evolves into rage, leaving her with the only option of proving to Alicia that she is not the one to be messed with, and with that comes impeccable payback that would make Alicia regret she ever even had the thought. With this, best friends Dylan Marvil, Kristen Gregory, and Claire Lyons, who are also in the clique, eventually begin feeling pressured and convinced to leave the group but are still considering the consequences. Dylan and Kristen, having always been aware of the bad side of Massie, had shared important and sensitive information with her and are feeling forced to stay in so they are not blackmailed if they do choose to leave. Claire, new and not wanting to return to the daunting days of when she hadn’t been in the clique, wants to protect her friendship with Massie, but doesn’t want to enrage her, until she passes her limits once she is held back from one of her greatest desires. They are all expected to give it their all and dedicate themselves according to the expectations and bidding of Massie Block, whom everybody admires. On the contrary, Alicia allows herself to go on measures that are nothing compared to the backlash she will face later on.

I found this read to be very unpredictable, as events turned dreadful when the characters topped each other, one after another, to prove who could be the bigger person and stand victorious through the changes and turns of events.

If people prefer taking on a good read with plenty of twists and turns in friendships as well as obstacles, this is the read. For a drama, school life, and coming-of-age book, this meets and beautifully displays the complications of life when people’s emotions get them in over their heads.
