Six of Crows is a fantasy book written by Leigh Bardugo. It is set in Ketterdam, a trade city influenced by 1700s Amsterdam. The book has elements of racism and the problems with war embedded in the plot and background. The book is about a group of criminals who are hired to sneak into a heavily guarded fortress and “rescue” a kidnapped scientist. The scientist holds the secret to making a drug called Jurda Parem. People who can use magic are called Grisha, and there are three orders that control different aspects of the world. Jurda Parem makes a Grisha extremely powerful for a short time, but is very addictive. I liked the book because it deviates from the stereotypical “chosen one” narrative of many fantasy books, and has very interesting characters. The book also shows the problems with war and racism in its interactions between Fjerda and Ravka, two of the world's nations based on early 20th-century Russia.
