Agatha Christie’s book Sparkling Cyanide does not feature Poirot as the detective. Colonel Race is actually Hercule Poirot’s good friend which could make it easier for readers to connect to him. In this story, shortly after the first person, Rosemary Barton, dies, they discover she was killed with cyanide. People wonder whether it was murder or suicide because there was a suicide note, but the circumstances seem strange. Her husband, George, receives a letter insisting that his wife was murdered. In an attempt to get some answers, a year after his wife died, he invites the same guests to meet at the same restaurant. When he gives a toast, George dies as well. It is discovered that he also died from cyanide poisoning. With such similar circumstances, many suspect fowl play, but others think it might have been suicide due tue the recent nature of his wife’s death. It is up to Colonel Race to determine who was really behind these peculiar deaths. He needs to know who stands to gain from their deaths including the victims themselves. The question is: who had motive and opportunity? The first death had a suicide note, but the second did not. Colonel Race, a former member of the British Spy agency MI5, uses his patience and skills at deduction to find the murderer.

This book is a great read for anyone who likes a good mystery that will keep you guessing until the very end. If you liked Murder on the Orient Express, Death on the Nile, or And Then There Were None, you would definitely like this book. The characters are interesting and Christie provides great descriptions, so you can picture it in your mind.
