The Naturals by Jennifer Lynn Barnes (4/5)

The Naturals by Jennifer Lynn Barnes is a thrilling read and the action never stops. It all starts with a seventeen-year-old girl named Cassie. She was living a normal life working in a diner, or so she thought, until the FBI came along. Her mother was killed when she was younger but the FBI was interested in Cassie for other reasons. Cassie had a special ability to read people. She could figure out who a person was to the finest detail, with a single glance. Cassie always had this ability, but never thought much of it. Little did she know, the FBI had a program for people like her. They were called Naturals. All of them read people, just in different ways. One Natural came to the diner Cassie worked at and left a note for her. She never looked back from that point forward. Cassie left her family to get into the program, where she was trained on how to use her abilities to their full potential. Just when she was getting the hang of everything, a killer appeared. This was Cassie’s first exposure to something this big, and she needed to succeed to prove herself. Despite their dislike for each other, all the Naturals had to work together if they had any chance of bringing the killer to justice.

The Naturals was entertaining the whole way through which made it hard to stop reading. Every chapter had its own excitement to add to the story. Barnes wrote the novel in a way that trapped you in. This also made it very easy to understand that the message of the novel is that everyone matters in their own way. Also, it is okay to have setbacks but pushing through them is what matters. The Naturals made me wonder if people like the Naturals are possible in the real world? And if so, what effect would they have on our society?

I would recommend this book to most people but especially to people who like constant action. The book is not hard to understand and being 308 pages, it is not too long of a read. It will definitely keep you going but good readers could finish this book in a couple of weeks. Overall, I would rate this book a four out of five but it is a great read and I can’t wait to continue reading the other books in this series.
