After witnessing a sudden tragedy, the main character, Lowen’s, life is changed forever. After receiving help from a stranger, Lowen is offered a book deal of a lifetime to work by the man she previously met. This new job entails taking over the writing of esteemed author Verity Crawford, who happens to be the debilitated wife of Jeremy, the said stranger. The horrific details of Verity’s life and relationships gave me chills and constantly left me with questions and new ideas. Hoover creates a dark and disturbing tone throughout the novel, all while making it seem romantic at the same time. The way the character of Verity is portrayed makes me dive deeper into my own morals and wonder how one person can be so incredibly messed up. The juxtaposition between Verity’s beauty and her insanity is what makes this novel so engaging and fun to read. This is by far the best book I have ever read and would recommend it to almost anyone, despite my lack of interest in romance or mystery novels. Verity does truly deserve a 5/5 for the suspenseful and disturbing nature of the plot.
