One of Us is Lying by Karen M. McManus (5/5)

Four suspects and a victim, all traumatized by a catastrophe in detention. Karen M. McManus’s murder mystery novel was published in 2017, followed by a sequel in 2020.

The book is about five students going into detention one day, but disaster strikes when one student dies unexpectedly. The four other students are immediately questioned by the police, but nobody confesses. It is well-known through their school that the victim was very disliked, mostly because he created a gossip app that released students’ personal secrets and changed their lives. As the book goes on, many more clues are revealed and more suspects arrive. The book is fast-paced and intriguing, with an unexpected ending.

I really liked the book because of the way it was written and how the mystery unfolded. The characters were all introduced and set up very well, giving everyone a motive for wanting the victim dead. I enjoyed how the reader got to follow along with the mystery and solve it with the four protagonists. Each chapter was from a different perspective, one of the four suspects, so it was very interesting to kind of read their thoughts before they were revealed. There are a lot of cliffhangers between chapters so you just keep wanting to read more to find out what happened. The language and the way of describing certain events were very suspenseful and interesting.

I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a murder mystery or a dark yet intriguing book. It is a huge mystery book and has many plot twists. I would rate it 5/5 because it was a good book and it was just fun to read and figure out new things about the murder.
